Andrew B. Kahng: Some Other Activities
- Service to San Diego Community
- Member, San Diego Mayor's
Balboa Park Committee (2007 - present). The Balboa Park Committee
is a 12-member citizens committee appointed by the Mayor and City Council.
It serves in an advisory capacity to the Mayor, City Council, and City
Manager on policy issues relating to the acquisition, development,
maintenance and operation of Balboa Park. For example, in 2008 it
generated this report.
- Member, Balboa Park / Morley Field Recreation Council
(2007 - present); Member, Budget Subcommittee (2009 - present).
- Mathematics Coaching
- From 2005-2013, I spent 7+ hours every week (3+ hours of
meeting time, plus preparation) on "Sunday Math" coaching (as a volunteer) to help
local elementary, middle school and high school students prepare
for competitions ranging from
Purple Comet Math Meet. See the three "Del Martians" teams in the middle-school and
results of the 2010 Purple Comet competition, the two "Del
Martians" teams in the high-school
the 2011 Purple Comet competition, and the two "Del Martians" teams in the
results of the 2012
Purple Comet competition, each of which registered
thousands of teams worldwide.
USAMO / USAJMO. Four students qualified for and took
the 2010 USAMO (2) and USAJMO (2), with two of them making Green
and Blue MOP. Six students took the 2011 USAMO (4) and USAJMO (2),
with one making Blue MOP. Ten students took the 2012 USAMO (4) and USAJMO (6),
with one a
USAMO winner and IMO gold medalist (IMO silver medalist in 2013),
USAJMO winner, and one a USAJMO honorable mention. (This is about half
of San Diego's Olympiad qualifiers. For comparison, the state of
Connecticut had four students who qualified for the 2012 USAMO/USAJMO exams.)
- P. O. Pistilli Undergraduate Scholarship
I serve as director of the
P. O. Pistilli Undergraduate Scholarship,
which seeks to increase the pool of professionals
in Electrical and Computer Engineering and Computer Science from
under-represented groups (women, African-American, Hispanic,
Native American, and disabled students).
